Jigawa tanker explosion: Death toll increases to 180

The recent tanker explosion in Jigawa State has claimed the lives of 180 people, prompting calls for urgent government action.

Alhaji Mustapha Sule Lamido, the People Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa, has urged the federal government to adopt safety measures seen in developed countries, such as transporting petrol and other flammable items by rail to prevent similar tragedies.

Lamido made this appeal while visiting the families of the deceased and victims in Majia village. He expressed his condolences for the lives lost and the injuries sustained by over 80 individuals in the explosion that occurred last Tuesday.

“This accident, along with many others across the country, should serve as a critical lesson for the federal government to take immediate action to prevent such disasters,” Lamido stated.

He emphasized the importance of public awareness, advising citizens to evacuate the area and report incidents to the police and fire services in the event of an explosion.

He further urged the public to avoid gathering around the site of such incidents, stressing the need to prioritize safety.

“This is a disturbing moment for us, as we mourn the loss of over 170 individuals, many of whom were young men. We pray for God’s mercy on the deceased and a swift recovery for the injured.”

Lamido noted that this tragic event will remain etched in the memories of the people of Jigawa and all Nigerians.

Reports indicate that the death toll has doubled from the initial count of 90, with many of the injured receiving medical treatment in hospitals across Jigawa, Kano, and Yobe states.
