Jigawa SUBEB to integrate Mukaranta Hausa literacy in schools

Published by

The Executive Chairman of the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Haruna Musa, has pledged to integrate the MuKaranta Hausa Literacy for Prosperity, a new module focused on enhancing Hausa pupils’ literacy skills, into the state’s primary school curriculum.

Professor Musa made this commitment during a one-day end-line assessment and dissemination event organized in collaboration with MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy. The event was held at Tahir Guest Palace, in the state’s capital, Dutse.

Expressing his satisfaction with the programme, Professor Musa stated that it has significantly improved pupils’ foundational literacy skills, allowing them to learn how to read and write more effectively. He remarked, “We are in discussions with them on how the programme will be sustained and expanded to more local governments, as it has made a serious impact on our pupils.”

While acknowledging the successes of the programme, he also addressed the challenges it faces, urging mothers and the School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) to take ownership of their local schools. He stressed that the government is doing its best to provide the necessary learning and teaching materials.

The Chairman also commended MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy for their contributions to the state’s education sector, calling on other partners to emulate their efforts in advancing education in Jigawa State.

In his remarks, the MuKaranta State Programme Coordinator, Mr. Bashir Yakubu, highlighted the remarkable progress achieved by the programme. He noted that pupils’ literacy skills in recognising letters had improved from 2% to 92% within just eighteen months of intervention.

Mr Yakubu further explained that the MuKaranta Literacy Programme had been introduced to 198 schools, benefiting over 22,500 pupils during its operation. He also confirmed that discussions with the Jigawa State Government and donor partners are ongoing to explore the possibility of extending the programme’s duration.
