Jigawa Speaker, Haruna Dangyatin, escapes impeachment

Speaker of Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, has escaped impeachment following the division among members of the house.

TRIBUNE ONLINE gathered some members backed out from the impeachment move, leaving him with the majority in the house.

Reports from the state indicated that members cast votes of confidence in the speaker and the state governor Malam Umar Namadi, respectively.

Some of the members last Monday initiated and commenced the impeachment process while the embattled speaker was away in Saudi Arabia.

It was further gathered that the speaker aborted his trip upon hearing the impeachment plot, which led him conveying sitting to control the situation and save his seat.

Further findings revealed that the house divided into parts as those with impeachment moves maintained ground while those behind the speaker resisted the move.

When contacted, the chairman House Committee on Information, Honourable Ibrahim Hashimu Kanya said the house remains one and united.

According to him, “As far as the Jigawa House of Assembly is concerned, we are one and united. We are 30 in number and only two opposition members and 28 of us are members of the ruling APC in the state.

“To confirm to you that the house in its sitting has passed a vote of confidence on Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s administration and the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin”.

Our correspondent learned the vote of confidence on the governor and speaker followed a motion moved by member representing Malam Madori Constituency, Honourable Hamza Adamu Ibrahim which was seconded by member representing Garki Constituency, Honourable Abdu Ila Muku.

During the house plenary, Hamza Adamu Ibrahim said casting a vote of confidence on the leaders of executive and legislative arm was meant to strengthen the development process of the state.

In their various contributions, members representing Guri, Buji, Fagam, Yankwashi, Kazaure, Bulangu, and Kafin Hausa expressed their confidence in the Governor Malam Umar Namadi and the Speaker, Right Honourable Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin for the development process initiated since assuming mantle of leadership.

They, however, urged the Governor and the Speaker to do more in terms of improving the economic well-being of the people in view of the harsh economic realities in the country.

In his response, the Right Honourable Speaker Alhaji Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin thanked members of the Assembly for the gesture and assured that the leadership of the executive and legislature would improve on what they are doing to justify the confidence reposed in them.
