Jigawa seals deal for N12bn water projects with Unicef, Qatar government

THE Jigawa State government has sealed a deal with UNICEF and Qatar government for the execution of N12 billion water projects aimed at achieving 100 per cent rural water supply in the state.

This was disclosed by Jigawa State’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba Hannungiwa at a biweekly media engagement forum organised by the Jigawa State correspondent chapel in Dutse. He said, “the project will have the blessings of the Federal Government.”

The commissioner explained that the projects will involve motorised water stations and handpumps and will be spread to all parts of the state.

He said, “This is part of the government commitment to achieve 100 per cent water supply in the rural areas.”

Alhaji Ibrahim Garba Hannungiwa added that “Jigawa has achieved over 80 per cent water supply which made it first in the northern region and second in the country according to Unicef survey”.

The commissioner disclosed that in the last six years of Governor Muhammad Abubakar Badaru’s administration, the government through the Ministry of Water Resources established 449 solar water stations and over 30 handpumps across the state.

According to him, as a result, Jigawa State is now declared second after Lagos State in terms of provision of access and potable drinking water across the 27 local government areas in the state.

He said within the last six years also the administration of Governor Badaru succeeded in converting 2,084 mechanised boreholes to solar water systems across the state.

While speaking on rural water supply, the commissioner said Jigawa government in collaboration with the Federal Government concluded an arrangement to embark on N12 billion water projects in Jigawa’s rural areas.

He then called on the good people of Jigawa to support the government’s effort by guarding water projects against the vandals in the state.

While making his remarks, the chairman Jigawa State correspondent chapel, Comrade Muhammad Zangina Kura said the forum will continue to engage both government and opposition to give their contribution towards development of Jigawa and its citizens at large.
