Jigawa raises IGR to over N5bn in 2024

The Executive Chairman of Jigawa State Internal Revenue Services (JIRS), Dr. Nasir Sabo Idris, said the agency has increased its revenue collection to over N51 billion in 2024, compared to N16 billion in 2023.

Dr. Idris made this disclosure while speaking to journalists shortly after declaring open a one-day capacity-building workshop on Grievance and Redress Mechanism (GRM) standard operating procedures. The workshop was organized by Jigawa Tax Justice/Prime Initiative for Community Development and Fiscal Transparency at the Manpower Development Institute, Dutse.

He explained, “As a result of rebranding the tax collection system in the state by adopting new strategies through the digitalization of tax collection, JIRS has successfully generated over N51 billion in 2024.”

According to him, this achievement was made possible through the new tax collection strategies introduced by JIRS and adopted by Governor Malam Umar Namadi.

He further stated that the Jigawa State Government, through JIRS, may soon engage 250 youths as J-Tax collectors in the state.

Additionally, the chairman disclosed that, in its determination to boost tax collection, the agency has resolved to recruit 250 temporary staff. “In this regard, we have submitted a memo to His Excellency, Governor Malam Umar Namadi, seeking approval to engage 250 youths as J-Tax educators across the 27 local government areas of the state,” he said.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of Prime Initiative, Comrade Muhammad Abdu Dutse, stated that the training workshop targeted JIRS zonal officers, area officers, and members of the Jigawa Enlightenment and Engagement Team (JEET) as participants.

Comrade Abdu Dutse added that the workshop aimed to strengthen the operational efficiency of Grievance and Redress Mechanism (GRM) handlers, enhance data disaggregation practices by sex, age, and disability for accurate reporting, and equip officers with the necessary skills to raise awareness of citizens’ tax rights and obligations.

He commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for his continuous support of Jigawa Internal Revenue Services (JIRS) and urged citizens to cooperate with the new tax collection strategies for a more efficient and transparent system in the state.
