Jigawa state governor, Umar Namadi said so far over 40, 000 people had been affected by flood and destroyed several farm products in the state.
The governor disclosed while receiving the House of Representatives Committee on Ecological Fund during a courtesy visit to the governor in the government house Dutse, said the disaster ravaged 14 local government areas.
Namadi explained that according to the reports in the government’s disposal 28 people died as a result of flood related incidents, in which some lost their lives on building collapsed, drowned in ponds and canoes capsized.
According to him 8, 000 people were presently in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps, over 7,500 houses collapsed and 6,500 farmlands is washed away in the frenal rainfall within one week.
The governor expressed fair on the situation as saying “in our previous experience the flooding normally happened around September ending to October early when some dam full of water and releases from the dams.
“We don’t have floods as early as this time around and from frenal rainfalls. So far 14 local government areas affected, what of when the waters been releases from dams, which most happen because of the situation of our Dams are all silt?”.
Namadi called on the Federal Government to introduce and insists on environmental impacts assessment in it’s road constructions and other projects to avoid environmental artificial problems.
He sited an example with the Shuwari, Maiduguri federal highway construction, which said “initially Buji and Kiyawa local government areas are not having flood in frenal rainfalls, but after construction of the federal highway by the federal government where the road is too high and made the Kiyawa town and villages aroun lower with out culverts for the water to fast. It made the two local government areas have serious flood disaster led the death and destroyed houses, farm products.”
He called on the committee to takes their time and go round the state and see by them selves the level of damages and more threats to the people and the state
“Going by the situation, number of the lives lost and level ot the damages, the state is in serious needs of special assistances and support fro the federal government, national international agencies and philanthropist as the state has no resources to takes care and maintain the necessary emergencies for the victims presently and future plans.
“So far we reached and supported nine affected local government areas with foods, and bedding materials, while the same gesture is also extended to that in the IDP camps where drinking water, temporary latrines and mosquitoes nets is provided. The remaining local government would be reache between now and tomorrow,” he said.
Speaking earlier the chairman of the house of representatives committee on ecological fund, Honourable Aminu Sani Jaji said they were in the state on official visit on the ecological problems devastating the state.
“We chooses to made Jigawa the parts of the state to visits considering the so many challenges bedevilling the state more especially in the northern region couple with the facts that the ecological challenges is enormous every where.
“The significant attached to this visit is to identify some areas or some states that would be engaged and benefits from this tour we are doing. We selected few states among the 36 states deserves to have special intervention in the areas of ecological challenges so as to complement the efforts of Mr president in his Renew Hope Agenda in addressing clements change and food security.
“Not only because Jigawa is located among the Sahel states but because of the challenges is encountering in the state and the fashions of our committee in addressing such ecological challenges and other some biodiversity ecosystem that needs to be addressed.
“Many are aware of ecological office, by name not by impacts, so when we come on board, we tried to make sure that the ecological office known by impacts.”
