Jigawa gov set up fact-finding committee on violent #EndBadGovernance protests

Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi has approved the formation of a Fact-Finding Committee to investigate the recent violence during the national EndBadGovernance protest held on August 1, 2024.

The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Mr Sagir Musa.

He stated that the decision was reached at a state executive council meeting chaired by Governor Namadi.

Mr Musa explained that the committee, which comprises 17 members, will be led by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.

The Permanent Secretary for Special Services will serve as the committee’s Secretary.

The committee’s members include:

• Commissioners for Local Government, Special Duties, Agriculture, Finance, and Information
• Special Adviser on Security Matters
• Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs
• Deputy Director of the State DSS
• Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations
• Deputy Commandant of the NSCDC
• Commander of the 26th Brigade Garrison
• APC State Secretary
• Representatives from Civil Society Organisations, the Council of Ulama, and Imams

The terms of reference for the committee include:

1. Identifying the root causes of the protest in the state
2. Determining the role of individuals involved in the protest
3. Assessing the extent of damage across the state during the protest
4. Evaluating the properties and items recovered from affected areas
5. Investigating the participation of underage and vulnerable individuals in the protest

Tribune Online reports that the state government incurred significant losses during the EndBadGovernance protest, including 106 trucks of fertiliser and over 4,063 bags of improved seeds from the Birnin Kudu Seeds Centre, which were looted.

Commissioner of Justice Barrister Bello Abdulkadir Fanini provided these details during a briefing after the council meeting in Dutse.

He also revealed that 403 suspects have been arrested in connection with the protest and the associated looting. Some suspects have already been charged and prosecuted.
