Jigawa gov mulls conversion of Dutse airfield to cargo airport

The Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Umar Namadi, has announced plans by his administration to convert Dutse Airport into a cargo airport in a bid to boost international trade relations with the outside world, aiming to generate more revenue.

Governor Namadi further disclosed that all necessary arrangements are underway to showcase the potential of the Maigatari livestock market to the outside world.

According to a statement signed by Senior Special Adviser (SSA) Hajiya Zainab Rabo Ringim and made available to the press on Sunday in Kano, the state government is currently in discussions with foreign investors to upgrade the Maigatari livestock market.

Hajiya Ringim quoted the governor as saying, “Maigatari market is a significant market when it comes to livestock. As a government, we are striving to improve the market, and part of our plan is to rebuild it, with specific attention to livestock.”

The statement revealed that the state government “is currently having a lot of discussions with the federal ministry of agriculture and food security and other partners on how we can develop the Maigatari livestock market.”

Gov. Namadi added, “We are not only trying to develop that market, but we want to take it beyond the shores of Nigeria, and that’s why we are having discussions with development partners; we are having discussions with international investors so that when they come in, we will sit down and do what we can do.”

He hinted that at the moment, “We are trying to make some arrangements on how we can upgrade our abattoirs to modern abattoirs.”

“We have our airport here, and we are trying to see how we can convert this airport to a cargo airport, and when that is done, we will see how we can open our livestock market,” Gov Namadi said

The governor therefore assured that “we have a lot of investors who will come and invest in terms of cold rooms and terms of modern abattoirs, and when that is done, we will now open Maigatari livestock markets beyond the shores of this country.”
