Jigawa CAN, student union, NLC disassociate selves from planned nationwide protest

The Jigawa branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Students Union, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have disassociated themselves from the planned nationwide protest against bad governance.

This was disclosed by the associations’ respective chairmen in speeches delivered at a town hall meeting organised by the Jigawa state government, presided over by the governor of the state, Malam Umar Namadi.

Speaking while opening the meeting at the Banquet Hall of Dutse Government House, Governor Malam Umar Namadi acknowledged the difficult conditions faced by the people in the country.

Governor Namadi explained, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we governors, and all other leaders are disturbed by the situation. As Muslims, we believe that everything is from Allah Almighty. We all know and believe that no human being has the power to make his fellow human rich or poor, healthy or sick, but only Almighty Allah.”

“It is part of the pillar of Islam for all Muslims to believe that whatever happens to them, whether good or bad, is from Allah Almighty. We find ourselves in a trial with Him. So, some are calling for a protest. Whom will they protest against?”

He added that the government is taking various measures to address the situation, including different initiatives and alternatives. “You are all aware of the recent federal government directive for importing food items and the distribution of rice to all 36 states and the FCT.”

Governor Namadi further emphasized, “So many policies and programs are in top gear in agriculture and food production in the state. All of this is to improve food production and achieve food security in the country.”

In his part, the chairman of the Jigawa State branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Father Maurice Hassan, said the Christian community in Jigawa state disassociated themselves from the planned protest.

Rev. Father Maurice Hassan disclosed, “CAN Jigawa state is not and will not be part of the protest. We, under CAN, support the peace existing in the state, and we will not allow or be part of anything that would temper the peace in the state and country.”

The Christian leader called on the leaders in power to consider the situation, stating, “I’m appealing to the government to find a solution. People are in a seriously troubling situation.”

The Chairman of the Jigawa State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Sunusi Alhassan, said, “We are not and will not be part of this protest because our national secretariat is not party to it.”

Also, the president of the Jigawa State National Student Association of Nigeria (NAJIS), Comrade Abdullahi Garba, said they would not allow any selfish individual or group to use them as youth to destabilize the peace of the nation for selfish interests.
