The city of Ibadan was set agog recently when thousands of people trooped out to receive the Population Media Centre (PMC) team who stormed the state capital on a sensitisation road show for the popular radio drama “Jangala” (Song of Life) and “A Dade Ana Yi” (Pit of Lies).
R gathered that PMC Nigeria is presently broadcasting these two serial dramas on radio stations throughout the country as a multi—channel national communication campaign. Jangala is a serial radio drama in pidgin English designed for the Southern Nigeria listeners, while A Dade Ana Yi in Hausa language is designed for the Northern Nigeria listeners.
The resident country representative of PMC, Abom Ephraim Okon said that his organisation is using the long-running serialized radio drama to promote several health related issues in people and the environment.
“Among these issues we are promoting are family planning and reproductive health, environmental protection, gender equality, peace building and social cohesion. It further educates people on the harmful effects of agricultural and cooking practices which accelerate deforestation, resilience-building, pipeline sabotage and pollution,” Okon added.
The road carnival navigated some major roads, markets and institutions, including Ring Road, Challenge, Molete, Oke Ado market; Others are Dugbe, Queen’s Cinema, Mokola, Sabo, lyaganku Ago Taylor and Akinyemi Bus Stop.
There were demonstrations of the use of contraceptives for both male and female, and customized gift items from PMC were given away to the public and the winners of different competitions.
The same road show, which had earlier been carried out in Akwa Ibom State and FCT is being assisted by local and international donors, including the Federal Government of Nigeria.
