JAMB: 36,000 sit for police recruitment exams

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Friday screened about 36,000 candidates shortlisted nationwide for police recruitment exercise.

The applicants sat for the aptitude test conducted through Computer Based Test (CBT) administered by JAMB in 156 CBT centres across the country.

Assistant Inspector General Police, in charge of Training, Mr Istifanus Shettima, who monitored the screening exercise in Abuja in the company of the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, said JAMB was involved in the exercise to ensure transparency and credibility of the selection process.

He noted the successful candidates would proceed to Police Staff College for training.

JAMB’s Registrar, Ishaq Oloyode while monitoring the examination at Kogo centre, a close proximity to its headquarters in Bwari, lauded the police authorities for keying into the CBT, as it was a guaranteed way of selecting the best applicants and discarding those found to be unworthy of the job without any sentiments.

Oloyede, said they conduct recruitment examinations for agencies both in public and private sector because the Board has facilities which are put to use once or twice a year.

He added that since the facilities are there, at minimum cost, people are allowed to use the system.

“We have agencies who believe in us and they patronize us, particularly those who want to do things transparently”.

“But if you don’t want to do something that is not transparent, JAMB is not the right place to go.

If you know that you want to set the rules and you want the rules to be enforced, and transparently so, JAMB offers a service at a cost that you cannot get elsewhere because we are using already established public service facility.

“All we ensure is that there must be set standard, and the set standard must be enforced.

I must congratulate the Nigerian Police Force because when they came we were not sure but they complied with all the agreement about setting the standard and ensuring that there will be no waiver at any point of the exercise,” he said.

He disclosed that the Board has conducted 16 similar examinations using the CBT this year and that many agencies have indicated interest for the Board to help them do their recruitment test.

Oloyede said the examination was peaceful across the federation except for one centre that had the initial problem but was promptly resolved.
