IYC tackles FG over Ibori loot, says position unacceptable

Published by

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), worldwide, has condemned the move by the Federal Government to divert the £4.2m Ibori loot belonging to Delta State to fund projects outside of the Niger Delta region.

Describing the move as “unacceptable and unsavoury,” the Ijaw youths said it was a “flagrant aberration by President Muhammadu Buhari to unclothe Peter to clothe Paul,” which is “disdainful and repugnant.”

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had stated on Tuesday that all the monies looted by former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, and recovered would be deployed for the completion of the second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Abuja to Kano expressway which are outside the Niger Delta region.

National Secretary of IYC, Comrade Frank Pukon, in a statement made available to journalists, on Wednesday, opined that the recovered loot should rather be channelled to build infrastructure in the Delta State where Ibori held sway as governor.

“Monies looted by former Delta State governor are meant for Deltans, hence, these monies be given to Delta State government to build an infrastructure for Deltans, not for Lagos-Ibadan expressway, second Niger Bridge and Abuja to Kano expressway as disclosed by the President through Mr Malami,” he asserted.

The IYC drew instances on how looted funds by some former governors were returned to the state governments and not to construct roads that are regional in nature.

“This decoy of President Buhari to rob Peter to pay Paul is an insult to Delta State government and Deltans in general.

“We, therefore, call on President Buhari to rescind his decision and demand the Delta State Government to explore all windows constructively to take what belongs to Deltans and Delta State; indeed,” the group added.
