IWD2024: We’ve implemented gender-inclusive policies for equal opportunities – Toyin Dada, Head, Learning, Devt, Eko Hotels

As we approach 2024 International Women’s Day, we sat down for an insightful interview with the Head of Learning and Development for Eko Hotels and Suites, Mrs Toyin Dada. In this conversation, Mrs Dada talks about how Eko Hotel is actively working to create an inclusive environment that propels women into leadership roles and the organization’s commitment to empowering women.

How do you identify talented individuals within the organization?

Typically, the line manager identifies and nominates them. We also spot them during training, especially how they participate and interact with the facilitators and their colleagues. Once we identify their potential, we create a learning path for them to grow into leadership positions. For us, leadership is not necessarily that they must work within the department where they were initially identified, they are groomed in such a way that they can take leadership in any role within the organization.

How long does it take you to groom leaders?
Although we began the training development path about two years ago, this year, however, the focus is to create a pool, particularly from middle management. If by chance we discover talented individuals below middle management, we’d be happy to pull them into the pool. Ultimately, what we are looking for is potential.

Interestingly, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Invest in women, accelerate progress”. How is what you’re doing helping to invest in women?

Trust me, we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace that empowers women and accelerates their progress within the organization. Currently, we are working on targeted training and development programs specifically designed to enhance the skills and competencies of our female employees. This will include leadership development courses, mentorship programs, and workshops focused on building essential leadership qualities.

As you already know, Eko Hotels has created an environment that is fair and inclusive for all its staff. We have implemented gender-inclusive policies to ensure equal opportunities for both men and women. Now we are going a step further to become pragmatic about identifying high-potential female employees and providing them with the necessary support and opportunities to advance their careers.

We also believe in the power of mentorship to propel women into leadership roles. Hence, we are on the verge of formalizing mentorship programs where experienced leaders within the organization will guide and support younger women in their professional growth.

Our goal is to not only invest in the professional development of women within the organization but also contribute to the broader societal goal of accelerating progress for women. We are proud to align with the International Women’s Day theme and will make concerted efforts to be a catalyst for positive change in the lives of women in the workplace and the community.

Regarding the International Women’s Day, why do you think women deserve to be celebrated?
Believe me, one day is never enough to celebrate us. Women should be celebrated all the time. Women have to deal with a lot of complexities and societal expectations, at the same time balancing workplace pressure with the demands of their immediate family. The struggle is even more so in patriarchal societies like ours that are only just beginning to recognise the value of women. That’s why as an organization that values the contribution of women, we do our best to create an enabling environment where women aren’t limited but thrive.

What advice do you have for women across the world?

Believe in yourself and your abilities. Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, mentors, and allies. Define your success, celebrate your achievements and lead by example.
