Its imperative govt includes critical reasoning into school curriculum ― Don

Published by

Federal and state governments have been advised to invest and include critical reasoning as a subject right from primary education as it poses a greater advantage to critical learning and developmental growth of indigenous and universal languages.

The coordinator of the Critical Thinking Project in Oyo State, Dr Leo Igwe, stressed that it is time government at all levels embrace and also provide resources to teachers and pupils in order to nourish their knowledge about what Critical Thinking entails.

Igwe stated this while speaking to newsmen at the commencement of ongoing workshop for primary schools teachers, at UMC Demonstration School, Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State, adding that the initiative will prepare Nigerian students better and allow them to compete with other students outside the shores of the country as well as have a place when it comes to employment because critical thinking is one of the most sought after skills by employers.

“My experience during doctorate programme in Germany revealed that we lack Critical Reasoning as a core subject in Nigeria. I saw this as a challenge and I took it upon myself to correct the wrongs even right from the beginning of Nigeria’s education system. When I returned, I approached Oyo State SUPEB and they were kind enough to embrace the idea and gave us the opportunity to organise a workshop. Oyo State education board also gave us approval which made us start the workshop with the teachers and we believe that the teachers will help in delivering the materials to pupils.

“Our greatest goal is to build the confidence of Nigerian youths so that they won’t be intimidated among their counterparts. Education is beyond cram and pours; it is about thinking critically about what one is taught. I urge the Nigerian government to invest and get an opportunity for this initiative as well as include it in the school curriculum,” he added.

He also noted the Oyo State primary education system has a greater advantage in embracing critical reasoning as it complements verbal and quantitative reasoning, adding that, “Critical reasoning is one of the top skills according to the World Economy Forum as it will solve problems and to be analytical. It is important to begin from primary school and we are ready to provide the support for the government.”
