Isolation centre: Plateau govt threatens to prosecute escapee

Plateau State Government has threatened that any inmate of isolation centre in the state who run away before completing the mandatory 14 days of isolation will be charged to court for criminal offence.

No fewer than five inmates of the NYSC Camp isolation centre in Mangu local government area of the state deserted the camp during the week and melted into the community.

The state Commissioner of Information and Communications, Mr Daniel Manjang who confirmed the incident said the five who escaped from the camp are being traced and will be prosecuted accordingly in line with the law adding that their contacts are being traced.

“They are being traced because they left their luggage behind, we have put in machinery to trace them. By the time we arrest them, it would be a criminal offence. In the first place, they were taking to the isolation centre because they contravened the executive order of the governor and now they have added insult to the injury.

“We are working on their contacts right now, we have strengthened security of the place, it is criminal offence they would be prosecuted. In the first place they were taken there because they committed an offence” he said.

Also, the Commissioner of Information and Communications in a statement signed by him equally expressed the state government displeasure on the flagrant disregard to government orders with regards to Corona Virus (COVID-19) especially on the presidential order which imposed a curfew on the country lasting between 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m each day.

The state government reminded that the curfew so imposed is still enforced and should be strictly observed until otherwise reviewed, failure of which culprits should have themselves to blame.

It further added that the wearing of masks is mandatory and should be ruthlessly enforced by the security agents saddled which such responsibility.

“Government has also utterly noted with dismay, an emerging culture which negates all intents and purposes in the name of jogging where people come out in their hundreds with total disregard to not only social distancing but in defiance of the lockdown order. The government would like to advise those involved to desist failure of which this act will be treated as an affront to constituted authority.

“Government means well for its citizens at all times but it will not fold its arms and watch its orders being disregarded with ignominy. Let us team up with the government in this fight against the pandemic that is threatening to engulf mankind”.
