The ambassador made the statement during the distribution of food to thousands of fasting Muslims and non-Muslims who gathered at the Al Habibiyah Islamic Society (AIS) Mosque in Guzape, Abuja, as part of the annual Ramadan Food Bank programme by the organisation.
Ambassador Mills Jr, who was the special guest of honour, shared that his understanding of Islam, gained during his service in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Lebanon, has shown him that the religion promotes peace and encourages charity to the poor.
He urged those who are well-off to make it a habit to reach out to the underprivileged and bring them happiness.
He said, “My view of Islam has been shaped over the years, particularly from my time serving as the US ambassador in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Lebanon. Islam is a religion of peace that emphasises spirituality, a relationship with God, and the involvement in charity to help the less fortunate.

“And this again reminds me of the shared values across many of the world’s religions, including Christianity and Judaism. It is very important for my wife and me to be here today, as it reminds us of our personal obligations as well. This kind of programme connects Nigerians and Americans, helping us share those common values.
“I’m so honoured to be here and to be part of the food distribution today, this Iftar, as an act of Ramadan. I know this is the 20th year that the US Embassy has participated in this event, and I’m very proud of our ongoing relationship.”
“Events like this should remind us all of the needy and the underprivileged in the world – those who need a helping hand. It also reminds us of the values across all religions, whether Christianity, Islam, or traditional faiths, that we have obligations to support and help those in need.”
A former governor of Plateau State, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, while speaking with journalists, called on other organisations to emulate Al-Habibiyah’s act of feeding the poor. He said that when the poor are well-fed, there will be a drastic reduction in crime and social unrest.
Senator Lalong said, “As a Christian, one of the best portions of the Bible is when Jesus Christ shared meals with the needy. Today, it’s a privilege to be part of those who are sharing meals and making people smile. When I arrived, I wondered if there would be a stampede.
“I like the orderliness on display; everyone received a meal, a very rich meal. Sharing meals with others is an act of service to humanity by the Organization (AIS). This is what we should all embrace because, if God has given you that privilege, always remember the needy. Someone, somewhere, is in need of food, and that is significant.
“Poverty and hunger have always been the root causes of crisis. If people know they will always receive a meal like this, why would they fight? Fighting destroys the very resources that help sustain them. This is something we should all do. We must call on organizations to do this and alleviate suffering in society. When you have, give back to those who lack.”
The National Chief Imam of AIS, Fuad Adeyemi, called for peace, emphasising that peace is what Islam stands for.
“We must maintain world peace because that is what Islam stands for. We should embrace the spirit of Ramadan, as it is a month when fighting is completely prohibited,” he said.
