After a recent visit to my doctor, my prostate was found to be enlarged. Kindly let me know if this is prostate cancer. I am 65 years of age.

Enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition that affects many men as they get older. It occurs when the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, grows in size. However, an enlarged prostate is not cancerous in itself. However, it is important to note that some of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate can mimic those of prostate cancer.
This can create confusion and make it difficult to differentiate between the two conditions without proper medical evaluation. Prostate cancer is a serious disease that occurs when abnormal cells in the prostate gland start to grow uncontrollably. Unlike BPH, which is non-cancerous, prostate cancer can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. To determine whether an enlarged prostate is cancerous or not, doctors typically use a combination of tests and examinations.
These may include a digital rectal examination (DRE), a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, and sometimes a biopsy. During a DRE, the doctor will insert a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the size, shape, and texture of the prostate gland. This can help identify any abnormalities that may be indicative of cancer.
