IPU: No plan to instigate arrest of Senator Natasha— Senate

The Senate has denied allegations of a plot to instigate the arrest of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her recent remarks at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) event in New York.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, dismissed her claims in a statement.

The Senator representing Kogi Central, who was recently handed a six-month suspension for breaching Senate Standing Orders, had raised an alarm while speaking with journalists in New York. She claimed to have received information about a plot to arrest her as soon as she arrived in Abuja.

She said: “I’m aware there are plans underway to arrest me as soon as I arrive in Abuja. The Senate President, Akpabio, sent three staff members, headed by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian embassy in New York, to evacuate me from the United Nations premises right after my speech.

“I was rescued by parliamentarians from other countries and the security.”

In his reaction, the Senate spokesman stated there was no reason to seek her arrest.

He said: “She’s looking for her lost content creation needle in a haystack.

“The Senate President and the Nigerian Senate have no reason to join issues with her anymore.

“If she’s being haunted by her unguarded vituperations against Nigeria at the IPU in faraway New York, she should spare the Senate, which is not ready to be her accomplice in such a sordid voyage.”
