Imo shun relaxation order
Residents of Imo State, on Monday, again observed another sit-at-home order by staying back at their homes and houses, away from their business and daily activities.
The usual heavy traffic jam and commercial activities that are seen and noticed in Owerri and other urban centres in the State disappeared with only a few vehicles seen on the roads.
This followed palpable tension and anxiety which has stuck tenaciously in the minds of the people arising from the Sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafrà (IPOB) more than a month ago.
Although the group has reportedly relaxed the order, coupled with series of statements by the police directing the public to ignore the order and to go about their normal businesses without fear of molestation, but the fear-stricken residents of the state appeared not to be in a hurry to comply with such directives by the police.
Markets, banks, business centres, streets and roads side trading, artisans, filling stations, schools, health centres, mobile food vendors, as well as the hospitality industries are either packed up or recorded low patronage.
A resident in the state who deals in electronics, speaking under anonymity, said people would continue to remain indoors on Mondays until Nnamdi Kànu is released from detention, adding that it was the only way the Sit-at-home order could be stopped.
Another resident in the state, Chika Nwankwo, insisted that as long as Kanu remained in detention, the sit-at-home order would continue to be observed in Igbo land.
Our correspondent who monitored the situation reported that motor parks in Owerri, the state capital, were empty of commercial vehicles for Port Harcourt, Enugu, Onitsha, Aba, and Umuahia bound passengers, just as only a few “Busimo” vehicles rendered minor intra-city services.
A good number of pedestrians were seen trekking on the roads to get to their destinations without the presence of any security patrol vehicles sighted unlike the case in the past.
