Introduce degree programmes in polytechnics, Rector urges govt

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, Dr. Mukhail Akinde, has urged the Federal Government to allow polytechnics to run degree programmes in order to eliminate the longstanding dichotomy between BSc and HND qualifications.

Akinde argued that this development would pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable education system in Nigeria.

He spoke on Thursday during a press conference organized for the institution’s 22nd convocation ceremony and 45th Founders’ Day anniversary.

The Rector noted that allowing polytechnics to run degree programmes would bridge the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge.

He suggested that massive investment in polytechnic education is the only way to address Nigeria’s economic setbacks.

The Rector stated that the country’s current economic upheaval could be attributed to the poor funding of polytechnics, emphasizing the capability of technical education to solve the nation’s problems.

“We are where we are today because we are not investing in polytechnic education. For instance, we have made so many inventions that could add value to our economy, but we cannot get them to the industry because we don’t have the necessary support.

“If we want to change the narrative in this country, we must fund polytechnic education and support the president. Also, any country that wants to experience significant success must invest in electricity.

“In fairness to the current administration, President Bola Tinubu is doing excellently. His policies are working, and we are seeing industries that had died in the past coming back to life. So many aviation companies left this country in the past, but we see them returning under Tinubu’s government. This shows that the economy is improving under him,” he added.

He announced that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, would deliver the convocation lecture, while the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and two others would receive special awards.

Akinde added, “We have carefully chosen the convocation lecturer, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who will lecture us on the Renewed Hope Agenda, the effects of emigration on the education sector (Japa syndrome), recommendations, and how we can move forward.

“The Academic Board was very meticulous in scrutinizing the three awardees. We have carefully selected the Honorable Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN).”
