Inter-Ministerial planning committee on EnjoyNigeria Expo seeks N200m funding to host SMEs

The Inter-Ministerial Planning Committee on EnjoyNigeria Expo, a private sector-driven initiative for cultural businesses is soliciting N200 million funding to host Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for export in December 2021.

Speaking on behalf of the Committee, the Director, Investment Promotion Department of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olukemi Arodudu said Nigeria was missing out from the export of cultural or heritage businesses.

“The whole idea behind EnjoyNigeria Expo is the fact that Nigeria has a very rich cultural heritage. A lot of nations in the world are making good money from their cultural heritage but we have taken our traditional businesses for granted.

“We have looked down on our cultural heritage for too long. So we decided to work with the Welcome to Nigeria Project on their initiative to help our Nigerian Youths, Women, and Men to understand that the basket you are weaving in Maiduguri can actually be a money-spinner internationally.

“Our aim is to formalize these small businesses to reach acceptable international standards for them to be able to export” she stated.

Arodudu said, “it is a little standardization that needs to be done and we are kick-starting a process that will help our traditional business people formalize, have their products standardized and trademarked for the international market.

“This is part of a government initiative to diversify the economy using SMEs to create wealth and employment. SMEs can employ more than the big Corporation, 2 employment or 3 here and there by SMEs ends up actually giving more employment.”

She said another aim of the EnjoyNigeria Expo is to re-orientate Nigerians on the significance of their cultural businesses.

EnjoyNigeria Expo is scheduled to hold from December 6 to 12, 2021. The planning committee said the state governments has been fully informed for adequate participation.

The Inter-Ministerial Planning Committee include the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Ministry of Aviation and Youth Development.
