Intending Muslim couples urged to embrace counselling, medical tests

INTENDING Muslim couples have been advised to undergo pre-marital counselling and medical tests in order to have enduring and healthy homes.

The charge was given at a relationship and marriage matters seminar organised by the Isefun-Olohunda Muslim Community, Isefun, Ayobo, Lagos State.

The guest lecturer, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladoyin, identified lack of requisite preparation as a major factor in the collapse of many marriages.

Oladoyin affirmed that people are likely to marry within the circles they keep and, therefore, challenged parents to ensure that their children move within Muslim circles and attend Islamic programmes.

He also counselled Muslim men to be alive to their financial responsibilities in the home while the women should be role models.

The second lecturer, Alhaja Fadeelat Adigun, a retired nurse in the Lagos State service, urged intending couples to undergo necessary medical tests before they go into marriage.

Adigun asked them to take genotype, Rhesus factor compatibility, blood group, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, yellow fever, among other tests.

She warned against people with incompatible blood and genotype groups marrying, saying failure to heed the advice might lead to having unhealthy children and attendant financial and emotional strain.

Adigun also called for regular testing and monitoring of blood pressure to prevent hypertension. She also advocated proper rest and sleep.

The Chief Imam of the Isefun-Olohunda Muslim Community, Alhaji Ibrahim  Ojoijo, commended the organising committee and called on those who attended the programme to spread the message to others.

The chairman of the Muslim community, Alhaji Raheem Alliyu, dispelled the notion that women don’t have religion.

According to Alliyu, men should ensure that their wives take active part in religious programmes.
