‘Integration of ICT must happen across all curricula to enhance learning’

Effective Information and Communications Technology (ICT) integration must be effected across all education curricula to enhance the learning process.

An information science expert, Dr Funmilola Omotayo, made the observation at a two-day workshop organised by the Nigeria chapter of Kappa DeltaPi (KDP) International Honour Society in Education, Indianapolis, USA, hosted by the Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan from Thursday 12 to 13 September, 2019.

She said the role of ICT in teaching and learning has become one of the most important and widely discussed issues in contemporary education policy, hence the need to incorporate ICT in teaching and learning.

While highlighting the importance of ICT in the educational process, the don said ICT “provides learning opportunities by enabling wider availability of best practices and best course materials, broadens access to quality educational services for teachers and learners, and enables teachers to deliver new instructional methods for teaching and learning.”

Among students, she said “it creates greater enthusiasm for learning, gives greater exposure to vocational and workforce skills, provides distance learners with online educational materials, and engages collaborative learning as well as enhances their social interaction, thereby preparing  them for the real-world experiences.”

The president of the KDP, Nigeria chapter, Professor Uche Grace Emetarom, a professor of administration and learning from Abia State University, Uturu, hinted that the chapter among over 168 chapters all over the world had been committed to transforming schooling situation from primary to tertiary level in Nigeria for the past five years.

She said the chapter had been to different states in the country identifying schools that are in dire need of help on behalf of the umbrella body, which had been giving financial support to refurbish dilapidated schools in Nigeria, as well as sending education materials from overseas to enhance teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.

Earlier in his welcome address at the opening of the workshop, Professor Abiodun Ayeni, head, Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, who doubles as the secretary of the society, noted that part of the vision of KDP is to help committed educators to be leaders in improving education for global partnership.

In his remarks, the dean of the faculty, Professor Andy Fadoju, commended the president of the society, Professor Emetarom, for ensuring that the fruits of the society that were sown some years ago had started blossoming, and thanked other members for their unflinching support and sacrifices.

Part of the activities marking the two-day workshop was a visit to the Saint Thomas RCM Basic School 3, Agbowo, Ibadan to make a donation of educational materials such as textbooks, story books, stationery, white boards, writing materias visual aids, among others, courtesy of the KDP International Honour Society in Education through the Nigeria chapter.

The headmistress of the school, Mrs S. M Alao, while appreciating the group for the kind gesture promised that the resources donated would be properly utilised.
