Director General, Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, Ibadan, Mr. Hezekiah Gbadegesin, has condemned the use of scientific equipment for negative purposes.
Gbadegesin made the remarks while giving a lecture at a 5-day training in Ibadan for participants of the Federal Science Equipment Centre, Ijanikin, Lagos, urging them to rather always use science for positive purposes.
The training is a collaboration between the Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), Federal Science Equipment Centre, Ijanikin and the Federal Ministry of Education.
The DG emphasised that one of the reasons terrorism and banditry are thriving is because they make use of science equipment for their nefarious activities.
Referring to several activities of terrorists in Nigeria and abroad, like attacks on the United Nations Building in Abuja and the attack on the World Trade Centre in the United States of America, amongst several others, the DG said the terrorists relied solely on science equipment to effectively carry out their acts.
Speaking on the management of science experiments, the DG urged the participants to also make sure that after-sales training and maintenance of equipment are considered, even if it’s a donation from groups or individuals.
He counselled them to also make sure the rooms to house the equipment are spacious enough to create an emergency exit in case of an emergency.
The DG, who also cautioned the participants against giving their equipment to non-scientists to maintain for them because of inherent dangers, advised that they should not, for any reason, manage any science equipment because it may not give them the desired results when they next wish to use it.
In his remarks, the Director, Federal Science Equipment Centre, Ijanikin, Lagos, Engr. Ismaila Yekini said the training was organised by his centre to further help their staff imbibe maintenance culture.
The director lamented that the training was borne out of the discoveries he, with a panel set up by the government, got from some polytechnics in Nigeria, whereby it was noticed that several science equipment were abandoned because of maintenance culture…
He therefore urged the participants to maximise the knowledge gained from the training and stop throwing away any faulty science equipment because it can be recycled.
Not less than 80 personnel of the centre have benefited from the manpower training, which is the second in the year 2023.
The training was also attended by the Deputy Director, Federal Science Equipment Centre, Ijanikin, Dr. Kazeem Rufai, Director, Planning, Research, and Development, NISLT, and Mr. Patrick Ikokoh, amongst others.
