Insecurity: Zulum launches summit to address almajiri education

Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum, has launched a summit aimed at reforming the Almajiri education system, a traditional Islamic learning method prevalent in Northern Nigeria.

The summit, held at Musa Usman Secretariat’s conference hall in Maiduguri on Wednesday, seeks to eradicate misinterpretation of Islamic knowledge that contributed to the emergence of Boko Haram insurgents.

Zulum explained that the summit’s purpose is to address insecurity’s root causes through education for all Borno citizens.

“To achieve this, the Borno State Government established the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board, introducing a unified curriculum for Sangaya and Islamic schools.

“The reform includes Higher Islamic Colleges catering to Almajiri children, blending religious and secular curricular.

“The Sangaya Reform will give Almajiri a better chance in life. Government intention is to streamline informal and formal education systems into quality integrated Sangaya schools for college and university admission,” Zulum noted.

Borno State Arabic and Sangaya Education Board Chairman, Shiekh Arabi Abulfatahi, thanked Governor Zulum for his support.

Guest speakers, Professors Mustapha Gwadabe and Mohammed Alhaji, urged a comprehensive overhaul of the Almajiri system.

The summit brought together education stakeholders, religious leaders, and community advocates to discuss integrating Almajiri with basic formal education.
