Insecurity: Retired DIG calls for community participation, inter-agency cooperation

Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Habu Ahmadu Sani has stressed the need for community involvement and inter-agency cooperation as key strategies for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking to journalists in Sokoto on Wednesday, Sani commended the Sokoto State Government for its support of security agencies, particularly in the provision of operational vehicles and logistics.

He praised the establishment of community guard policing in the state, describing it as a significant step toward enhancing grassroots security.

According to him, the provision of adequate support and logistics to community guards has strengthened their morale and improved their ability to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies.

He emphasized that communities play a vital role in maintaining security, as they serve as the first line of defense against crime and insecurity.

The retired police boss urged communities to actively participate in security initiatives such as community policing and neighbourhood watch programs. He also stressed the importance of collaboration among security agencies, noting that seamless intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, and joint responses to threats are crucial to tackling insecurity effectively.

He further highlighted that fostering trust between communities and security agencies is essential for successful security operations. He called for continuous engagement and dialogue with local communities to build confidence and promote cooperation in intelligence gathering and crime prevention.

The retired police chief also recognized the significant role of traditional rulers in maintaining security, as they are often well-respected figures within their communities. He emphasized that intelligence gathering must involve local communities, as their firsthand knowledge can provide valuable insights into potential security threats.

Sani outlined several strategic measures to improve Nigeria’s security framework.

He urged federal and state governments to enhance security funding, particularly for the procurement of modern equipment and logistics.

He called for regular training programs should be implemented to ensure personnel remain efficient and up to date with modern security techniques.

The retired DIG advocated for increased recruitment into the police, armed forces, and paramilitary agencies to boost security presence nationwide.

“There is need for expansion of community policing programs, emphasizing their effectiveness in crime prevention and intelligence gathering.

“We also need continuous review of operational strategies. Security strategies must be regularly assessed and adjusted to respond to emerging threats.

“There is a need for enhanced synergy among Security agencies. This will improved collaboration and coordination among security agencies are essential for a unified and effective security response”.
