Worried by the incidences of crimes, as well as attacks and kidnappings in his constituency, the lawmaker representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Timehin Adelegbe, said he has facilitated the establishment of a security post for the Vigilante Group in the constituency.
Adelegbe, who disclosed this during an interactive session with newsmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital, said this initiative aims to put an end to insecurity in the area and ensure development.
According to him, all plans have been concluded to collaborate with security operatives and the people of the constituency to deploy new strategies to fight armed banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges in different parts of the communities within the constituency.
He disclosed that he would replicate, in other major communities in the constituency, the vigilance group established at Ifon to tackle kidnapping and other crimes.
The federal lawmaker, who noted that the state government was not relenting in tackling insecurity, called for collaborative efforts in addressing the menace, saying efforts are ongoing to make the constituency safe from kidnappers and criminals who have been tormenting the people, particularly farmers.
He disclosed that the efforts of the vigilante group had paid off, forcing criminals to stay away from communities that were once dens of kidnappers, noting that effective security of lives and peaceful coexistence are critical requirements for societal growth.
According to him, the vigilante group in the area has been equipped with the necessary logistics, particularly operational vans, to facilitate their operations, noting that communities cannot witness any development in the face of insecurity.
He said: “When we realised that nowhere was safe anymore, as kidnappers were abducting people incessantly, I decided to engage the Vigilante Group to help us fight crime.
“I provided necessary logistics for them, including operational vehicles, so that they could easily move to crime scenes and patrol black spots in the community.
“Ever since they began to patrol, they have arrested some of the kidnappers, while others ran away from the community, which they had earlier turned into their hideout.”
The lawmaker said that apart from his efforts to send criminals packing from the area, he had completed the construction of the Ute/Okeluse Road, which was completed on Saturday, making it more difficult for criminals to operate along the road as they had done before.
He said that apart from this, a 40 km road connecting over 14 communities between Owo and Ute would be constructed, and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has promised to lay asphalt on the road once construction is completed.
Reeling out some of his projects, the lawmaker disclosed that he has constructed science laboratories at Emure Grammar School and Uso Grammar School to enhance students’ performance in science subjects.
He assured that the cocoa seedlings, among other empowerment tools, which he has been distributing to farmers across communities in the constituency, would boost cocoa production in the state.
According to him, farmers in the constituency have been calling on him to carry out the distribution of another set of improved cocoa seedlings this planting season.
Besides the distribution of seedlings to farmers, fingerlings were also distributed to youths, whom he encouraged to embrace agribusiness.
In the area of empowerment, he disclosed that over 3,000 youths and women have been given grants to start their businesses, while some were provided with starter packs.
He listed the projects he planned to carry out, including the construction of 1,000-capacity stadia in Owo and Ifon towns.
He said, “Over 150 youths were trained in fish farming, provided with starter packs and N30,000. Aside from that, over 500 sewing machines, over 350 generators, over 300 dryers, over 350 motorcycles, and over 200 head dryers were distributed.”
“Cash grants ranging from N20,000 to N100,000 were given to over 3,000 youths and market women, among others.
“As the custodian of the mandate of the good people of Owo and Ose in the Green Chamber and as a high-ranking parliamentarian, having been elected twice into the same office, it has become imperative for me to give an account of my stewardship to my constituents in appreciation of the trust and confidence reposed in me.
“My commitment to infrastructural developments, poverty alleviation, skill acquisition, mega empowerment programmes, sports development, educational support through bursary awards to students, construction of classroom blocks, renovation of schools, and financial aid to market men and women is one that can be attested to by the good people of Owo and Ose.”
He assured constituents that all ongoing projects would be completed while new ones would be initiated to ensure no community was left behind.
Adelegbe expressed gratitude to the people of Owo and Ose for their continued trust and support, pledging to remain committed to delivering more dividends of democracy in line with his campaign promises.
The Chairman of the APC in Ondo State, Engr Ade Adetimehin, said the party is proud of the lawmaker representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency, Timehin Adelegbe, for his numerous developmental projects.
Adetimehin described Adelegbe as a distinguished lawmaker who is interested in the welfare of his constituents, saying, “I have witnessed many of his empowerment programmes in Owo and Ose. You are doing well, and our party is proud of you.”
