Shehu Sani
Former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani on Monday expressed his concerns about the Nigerian government’s decision to borrow $618 million for the purchase of 34 additional fighter jets.
Sani in an X (formerly Twitter) post questioned the strategic value of fighter jets over drones in combating bandits and terrorists who are known to operate on motorcycles, particularly Chinese “Jingchen” models.
Reflecting on a previous expenditure under former President Buhari, in which $496 million was spent on acquiring Super Tucano aircraft, Sani raised questions about the military’s operational approach and spending priorities, especially given the nature of threats in Nigeria.
The post read, “I’m not a defense expert, so I don’t know the Wisdom in the idea of borrowing $618m to purchase another 34 fighter jets after the Buhari’s $496m SUPER Tucanos. Again, how useful are fighter jets and not drones in fighting Bandits and terrorists on Chinese “Jingchen” motorcycles?”
