Insecurity: Don calls for community-based approaches to end senseless killings

DR Umar Ahmed, Rector, Zungeru Polytechnic, Niger, has called for the adoption of a community-based approach to end the senseless killings parts of the country.

Ahmed made the call in Minna on Saturday.

He said engaging communities to build peace, through offering intelligence information on criminal elements in their midst would enable the security personnel to apprehend all those involved in the acts.

The don said the efforts of security agencies would enhance mutual trust and peaceful coexistence in the affected communities.

He, however, urged stakeholders, traditional and religious leaders to help in the peace process by identifying those involved and make them accountable for their actions.

“The senseless killings going on in some parts of our country  is a bad omen to our corporate existence as a nation.”

Ahmed also urged security agencies to seek the cooperation of stakeholders in identifying the root causes of the crises and find a lasting solution to them.

In addition, he commended President Buhari for demonstrating political will in tackling the activities of Boko Haram in the North-East of the country.

“Mr President should apply the same method by holistically tackling cattle rustling, kidnapping and militancy to enable Nigerians to move on with their legitimate businesses.”

He also called on Nigerians to complement government’s efforts with useful and intelligence information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of sponsors of violence in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is our country, we have no any other place to call our own; hence there is a need for us to support the government.
