Independence Day Celebration: Akeredolu pardons 17 inmates

AS part of activities to celebrate Nigeria’s 58th Independence anniversary, the Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu has granted amnesty to 17 prisoners in the State prison serving various jail terms.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Segun Ajiboye, on behalf of the governor on Sunday.

Ajiboye said that the prisoners had been duly convicted of various terms of imprisonment while the governor acted in accordance with the recommendation of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

The Governor said “in exercise of the power conferred on me by paragraph (d) of the sub-section (1) of Section 212, of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). I am pleased to extend my grace and mercy unto the said prisoners.

“My will and pleasure, therefore, is that you discharge the said prisoners out of prison custody according and forthwith.”

Meanwhile, Akeredolu has called on Nigerians to continue to be united despite the challenges confronting the country, saying the country would soon overcome its challenges.

The Governor in his Independence message called on Nigerians to fight its common enemies which had been identified as corruption and insecurity.

The Governor said: “endeavour to share with those who do not have, describing Nigeria as the light of the black race, and urging the people to rise up to the challenge.

“As President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government is leaving no stone unturned to fix the nation’s inherited battered economy, let us continue to support the President’s initiates geared towards lifting the country.”
