The UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU) has underscored the need for the Nigerian government to integrate the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA) into the education system for sustainable education in the nation.
The IACIU disclosed this even as it reiterated its commitment to promoting sustainable education in Nigeria by implementing CTCA in secondary schools.
Speaking at a transformative programme themed “Sustaining Education in Nigeria: Embracing the CTCA to Promote Cultural Diversity in Secondary Schools,” the Director of UNESCO IACIU, Professor Peter Okebukola, noted that incorporating CTCA into the Nigerian education system will improve learning outcomes and celebrate cultural diversity.
Addressing education sector stakeholders, the director explained that CTCA is a transformative teaching model that combines cultural relevance, technological tools, and contextual learning to tackle complex academic concepts.
Okebukola further stressed that the innovative approach will not only enhance student understanding, especially in STEM and digital literacy but also ensure that indigenous knowledge and cultural expressions are central to classroom instruction.
He said, “We all know that Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity is a tremendous asset in education. This CTCA is an innovative approach which will not only enhance student understanding, especially in STEM and digital literacy but also ensure that indigenous knowledge and cultural expressions are central to classroom instruction.”
The convener of the programme, Dr Esther Oluwafunmilayo Peter, while addressing the participants, noted that by embracing CTCA, Nigeria can foster a more inclusive and engaging learning environment that honours our heritage while equipping students for the future.
She said: “This initiative aligns with UNESCO’s 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, highlighting the significance of culturally responsive teaching methods in promoting social cohesion, innovation, and sustainable development.
“As Nigeria advances its efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), adopting CTCA as a national strategy could greatly improve learning experiences, safeguard cultural heritage, and prepare students with the essential skills needed for a fast-changing global environment,” she added.
