Inadequate infrastructure major challenge in most public varsities ― NAUS

Published by

The National Association of University Students (NAUS), has lamented the dearth of infrastructure and facilities for enhanced teaching and learning in some public universities in Nigeria.

Senate President of NAUS, Comrade Ibrahim Lawal, spoke on Tuesday when he led a delegation of the Senate Leadership of NAUS on an unscheduled visit to the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.

The students passed a vote of confidence on the management of the University, after they engaged all the critical stakeholders in the university, conducted a facility tour, and engaged the Students’ Union Government.

Lawal noted that despite huge sums of funds allocated to education by both Federal and State Governments every year, those funds have not had a physical impact on the sectors in the areas of infrastructure and facilities on the campuses.

According to him, during visits to some of the universities, both Federal and State-owned institutions, students fight to secure venue for lectures and examination, because of acute shortage of lecture halls, no equipment for practicals, lecturers struggle to get office space, most structures are archaic and dilapidated.

The NAUS Senate President said the unscheduled visit to the university enabled the delegation to have first-hand information of happenings in the university since the resumption of Professor Abayomi Fashina as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University and also conducted an on-site assessment of infrastructures in the university.

He noted that the Federal University Oye Ekiti is unarguably one of the fastest-growing public universities in Nigeria today, given the consistency of leadership and the vision of the current management team of the university

He said: “NAUS is greatly impressed by the excellent corporate governance practices the university operates since the assumption of office of Professor Abayomi Fashina which has earned the trust and commendation of staff and students.

“Let it be noted that all the staff unions in the university also pass a vote of confidence on the Vice-Chancellor and most importantly the Students Union Government gave an excellent testimonial of the performance of the Vice-Chancellor in the area of infrastructural development and prioritizing of student’s welfare,” Lawal said.

He further stated that efforts of the Vice-Chancellor to also digitize the university and simplify the process of teaching and learning was highly commendable, saying if there was anything the COVID-19 pandemic has thought academic institutions “it is to begin to build alternative processes that will reduce physical contact while still maintaining the quality of pedagogy.”
