Imo State House of Assembly
The Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Mr Paul Emeziem, has denied involvement in the impeachment of the former deputy speaker of the Assembly, Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, saying that it was not his personal decision.
Emeziem stated this while reacting to what he described as mischievous and baseless reports on some sections of the social media that the removal of the former deputy speaker of the House was financially induced.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, Collins Osuji, he recalled that Iwuanyanwu was on the floor of the House on Tuesday when he was removed from his position, following the resolution reached and signed by 18 out of the 27 members of the House.
The Speaker stated that he was bound by the law to approve the demand as contained in the resolution.
He described the reports of financial inducement as a handiwork of his enemies and a calculated attempt to malign his personality and that of the other House members, just as he enjoined the people to disregard the report.
The speaker reiterated his commitment to effective service delivery as well as his loyalty and support for the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma and his government in the state.
He said: “as the chief servant of the House, as required by ethics and law guiding the state Assembly, I only made the pronouncement after acknowledging that the resolution received the endorsement of the far majority of the House members.
“The mischief-makers, sponsored by known elements, have taken to social media platforms to ditch out lies aimed at maligning the personality and integrity of the Speaker and the other members of the House.”
He completely denied the report that he induced the members with N10 million Naira to facilitate Iwuanyanwus’ removal, describing such allegation as not laughable and misleading, but equally childish.
On the speculation that he and the members were bought over by some known politicians in the state to carry out the decision and by extension destabilise the state government, the speaker said that such information was nowhere near the truth and should totally be disregarded.
The speaker said that Imo people could testify to who is who in the state, adding that he, being a transparent, diligent and credible personality, could never indulge in any form of blackmail, backbiting or campaign of calumny against even his enemies.
He said: “to the best of our knowledge, I was bound by the law to respect the decision of the majority of the House which I preside over.”
