The Saturday July 31 ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held across the 305 wards of the state has been adjudged as most peaceful in the history of party congresses in the state, the party has said.
The exercise, which was meant for the election of ward exco (officials) of various wards level of the party, began with the display of Ward Congress Committee (WCC) members, as well as their various duty post ahead of the commencement of the congress.
Addressing newsmen at the party secretariat in Owerri on Sunday, the Director-General of APC Media Centre, Mr Cajethan Duke, said that the exercise started at the early hours of Saturday with the distribution of relevant congress materials.
Duke said that the flawless and rancour free distribution of materials signalled a significant departure from business as usual, adding that as at 9.30 am everyone had left the party secretariat peacefully for their respective wards.
According to him, at the wards, the exercise witnessed impressive and tremendous turnout of party members, who came out in their numbers to participate in the programme and elected their officers without fear, harassment or intimidation.
Duke said that the party adopted consensus in line with the party’s constitution and congress guideline which the members unanimously reaffirmed through voice vote as witnessed by officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies.
He described the conduct of the party congress as successful, devoid of any encumbrances and hitches, adding that it was an eloquent testimony of the leadership stability of party and the unity of purpose.
The state APC Director General, Media said that contrary to the expectations of opposition political parties, the congresses recorded no single incident of violence and or obstruction of any kind across the state.

He said: “I can confirm to you that the exercise was peaceful and successful. As I speak, there is no single report of any irregularity. We made the process very open, participatory and transparent. You cannot fault the outcome of this exercise because we are not unmindful of public expectations.”
