Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has asked those waiting for him to declare interest in the presidential race in 2023 or any time in the future to perish the thought.
There have been various speculations about what the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was planning for the future.
At a dinner in honour of his birthday, on Sunday, in Abuja by Nigerian Platform (NP), the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) then disclosed his intention to return to the University of London in September this year to pursue a doctor of philosophy in Law.
Many speakers at the event also urged him to consider leading the country in the future.
“What I’m doing with my life. I think I should say what I’m doing so there will be no speculation.
“If I say I am not interested in politics it is because I’m not interested in politics. If I wanted to go into politics, I will come out and say I’m contesting for the president of Nigeria.
“I am a Nigerian. But I’m not interested. This is because I haven’t prepared myself for politics.
“I had prepared myself for a long time for academic life, I prepared myself for the Emir, I prepared myself for banking and finance but I have no one-day experience in politics. You can’t just jump into politics, you learn.
“I have applied, I have been admitted and by September I am writing a PhD in Law at the University of London.”
According to the head of the Tijjaniya Islamic sect in Nigeria, he will be writing his theses on “Codification of Muslim Family Law as Instrument of Social Reform.”
He explained that as emir of Kano, he worked on the reformation of Islamic family law and ultimately sent it to the house of assembly, which eventually abandoned it.
“Maybe the time has not come for northern Nigerian Muslims to accept that it is wrong to beat your wife. Maybe the time has not come for them to understand that they should not marry off their daughters at twelve or thirteen.
Maybe the time has not come for them to understand that even if you cannot maintain one wife, you should marry four and you can have fifteen children and leave them on the streets.
“Maybe the time has not come but it doesn’t mean it is not the right time. Maybe 10 or 20 years from now, we will be back there. The truth will always be the truth. You can ignore it but if it has consequences, you can never escape those consequences”, he bemoaned.
Earlier in his remarks Coordinator of NP, Dr Aliyu Modibbo Umar had disclosed that the group was formed by late Alhaji Ahmed Joda as a way of seeking urgent solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
“The Nigerian Platform Group had, in the interim, focused on the sorry state of the North; particularly the alarming and worsening poverty level but with a wider view towards proffering workable solutions to the nation’s problems.”
