I’ll implement new minimum wage if… — Gov Bago

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has affirmed that his administration is prepared to implement the N70,000 minimum wage as long as resources permit.

He made this declaration in an interview with newsmen following the opening of the 2024 quadrennial state delegate conference of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Minna on Wednesday.

Represented by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, Governor Bago stated, “The issue of minimum wage is a done deal. We are waiting for its implementation at the national level. As far as funds are available, we will not hesitate to ensure the implementation in the state.”

He also mentioned that the government has cleared the backlog of salaries for health workers and is actively renovating 100 healthcare facilities to provide a better working environment.

Additionally, the state has consistently paid counterpart funds and established the Ministry for Primary Healthcare Development to address the welfare of health workers.

Governor Bago expressed gratitude to the union leaders for their collaborative relationship with the state government.

He urged them to consider the government’s efforts to improve worker welfare while continuing their advocacy.

“Workers have the right to agitate for their entitlements, but they should also appreciate what the government is doing to support their welfare,” he added.
