Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has put a lie to the reasons adduced for the removal of his Chief Security Officer (CSO) by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris.
The police boss had claimed that the governor’s CSO was removed, having been seen among protesters belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the governor said the IGP was wrong and lied as he noted that his CSO was removed for stopping the APC protesters from gaining entry into the Government House, Port Harcourt.
This was as he told the IGP that the surreptitious withdrawal of his CSO has exposed his life to danger, saying it was an embarrassment to due process.
The governor, while speaking with the police boss in his office, on Thursday, also told him to transfer the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr Steven Hasso and the Commander of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Akin Fakorede, for allegedly deliberately compromising the security of Rivers State because of partisan reasons.
He expressed regrets that the IGP, without consultation, allegedly took sides with an Hasso who he said attempted to invade Government House with APC supporters, adding that he was shocked by the statement from the Office of the Inspector General of Police that his (Wike’s) CSO was withdrawn for an alleged misconduct.
The governor also debunked the police official reason for the withdrawal of his CSO, saying he (the CSO) Steven Hasso and the crowd, allegedly hired by APC, from invading Government House.
“The moment you touch my Chief CSO, you are telling me that you are ready for me. As I sit, I am empty; I have no protection. When people start to embarrass the governor, take his CSO without information, it is completely wrong. What you have done is the highest disrespect to the office to the Office of the Governor.
“I am pleading with you, my life is very important. I will take any CSO you bring to me that I don’t know. This is a matter of security and protection; it is not what you do with levity”, he said.
The governor warned the IGP against politicising security during the rerun election, and also berated the police for declaring a state-wide curfew without consultation with the state security council.
Earlier, Mr Idris said he was in the state to ensure that the election was peaceful and urged the people to support the security agencies to deliver peaceful polls.
