IGP orders reopening of Onitsha NBA chairman’s murder case

Published by

All seems not to be going well in the police family as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has ordered a special committee on investigation to reopen the murder case of Mr Barnabas Igwe and his wife Amaka, with the aim of bringing perpetrators to book.

The acting IGP expressed shame that all murdered cases in the past had never been successfully concluded and prosecuted.

He has consequently directed the team to dust up all high profile murder cases, as he is ready and prepared to make a difference in investigation.

A top reliable police source disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune that the brutal murder of Igwe who was the chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Onitsha, was another case which was not properly prosecuted.

Igwe and his pregnant wife were killed in front of their house while alighting from their car in September 2002.

The police source revealed that despite the progress made on the case by investigators, the case was at the end of the day muddled up.

The source stated that even the main suspect who pulled the gun on the couple was arrested and confessed to the killing.

However, pressure then mounted on the police for his release on bail and was subsequently released to escape to Cameroon.

The police source added that when the suspect was to be re-arrested, he was no where to be found, but the traditional ruler of his town in Anambra State was arrested.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that all efforts by the children of the traditional ruler to get their father released proved abortive, as the police gave the condition that he would only be released when the suspect, Odogwu Anam, was produced to the police.

The source revealed that the traditional ruler’s children then arranged a meeting with the suspect and detectives surrounded the house where the meeting was supposed to be held, but as soon as the police swooped on the suspect, he disappeared.

The suspect not knowing that detectives had surrounded the building, wanted to jump down from the high fence, where he was warned not to or risk being gunned down.
