Igbo quit notice: Peace Corps lauds Arewa youths’ move to review decision

Following a quit notice handed to Igbos living in the Northern part of the country by youths in the region, the Peace Corps of Nigeria has commended the decision of the Arewa Youths to review its decision describing it as a welcome development.

The National Commandant of the Corps, Dr Dickson Akoh stated this after a consultative meeting of stakeholders of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Abuja.

He asserted that there was no need for the disintegration of the country and appealed to the elders of other region to engage their youths in discussions that would engender peaceful co-existence.

Also speaking on the challenges facing the Youth Council, Dr Akoh urged the youths to remain resolute in decisions of the meeting and urged them to commence the process of rebuilding the Council.

According to him, there is need for continuous consultation that would lead to sustainable peace in the Council, as well as enable youths take their rightful place in governance.

On their part, stakeholders in the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, resolved to set aside all ethnic, religious and political differences and work together to preserve the unity of the country.

They also condemned the hate speeches by some Nigerians, the eviction notice and the call for the disintegration of Nigeria.

Reading a communiqué from the meeting, the Benue Chairman of the Council, Comrade Frank Mbasiya said such hate speeches and agitations were not in the best interest of the nation.

The meeting commended the National Assembly for passing the bill for an act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps, stressing that the bill when assented to by the President, would provide job opportunities for unemployed youths.
