Igbo Elerin community gets borehole from NGO

IN order to cushion the effects of hardship faced by the people of Igbo Elerin community and environs, the Water for Needy Communities Initiative (WNCI), on Sunday, commissioned a borehole donated to the community.

According to the Chairman, Sharing With Others (SWO), the mother body of Water for Needy Communities Initiative (WNCI), Professor Ibiyemi Mojola, the organisation was informed that members of the community were  in dire need of potable water hence the provision of the facility.

“The borehole was handed over to the community on October 5, 2016, But it was not officially commissioned and that is what we have come to do today. Many communities are suffering from lack of potable water, People drink any kind of water and this can cause all kinds of health challeges,” she said.

She, however, disclosed that the facility is the deepest the organisation had  dug because efforts had been made in the past by other bodies to provide a borehole in the community but to no avail. “I must say that this is the most successful project we have executed”. she added.

Also speaking, the Minister-in-Charge, Methodist Church Nigeria, Igbo Elerin Circuit, Age Local Church, where the borehole was situated, Reverend Emmanuel Odeniran, said before WNCI provided the borehole, the community and environs had been battling with series of challenges before they could get water.

“When I came, I learnt that even in the church premises, there had been six attempts to dig a well which turned out to be efforts in futility. Since I have been posted here, I have been using my vehicle to get water from two neighbouring villages.

“I fetch up to 15 kegs of water four times every week for me and my family to get water to use. This is not exclusive to me, as other members of the community face the same challenge. The only time we do not experience water shortage is during the rainy season. But ever since this borehole was dug for us by WNCI, it has been a wonderful experience.

“We thank the Water for Needy Communities Initiative for counting us at Igbo Elerin worthy of this gesture. We can only pray that God in His infinite mercies and wisdom will continue to bless and be with them. We also promise to make the maintenance of the borehole facility a priority,” he said.

The Prelate Emeritus, Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence, Sunday Ola Makinde, also commended WNCI for what he descibed as a laudable gesture and urged other non-government organisations to emulate the gesture as government alone cannot provide basic amenities for the people.
