The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has tasked airport workers and staff on transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties and shunning all forms of corruption.
Chairman, ICPC, Prof Bolaji Owasanonye made the call in Ibadan, on Tuesday, in his goodwill message at the two-day anti-corruption sensitisation programme organised by the Anti Corruption and Transparency Unit(ACTU) of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Pointing to airports being the gateway to the nation and states, Owasanonye stressed that a high level of transparency and accountability was imperative in view of negative reports about the state of airports in the country.
To this end, Owasanonye who was represented at the occasion by Mr Japhet Udeani, a staff of ICPC, said there was a strong need for airport workers and staff to be corruption-free.
He further stated that making public service systems corruption-free and efficient required sincere commitment and diligence from all citizens and more so public servants in our public institutions. He urged all staff of FAAN to always do the right things even when no one is watching.
While commending the FAAN Director, Rabiu Yadudu and the management team of FAAN for organising the programme, the ICPC boss also sought more support for the ACTU of FAAN to help in checkmating the incidences of corruption and other related vices.
In her speech, the representative ACTU of FAAN, Mrs Helen Akinkugbe, said the programme is aimed at creating anti-corruption awareness and curbing corrupt practices at the nation’s airports.
Though she observed that the tasks before ACTU were arduous and required courage and commitment, she, however, pledged that the unit would assiduously execute its functions and achieve the objectives for which the unit was established by the Federal government.
She sought the support and cooperation of FAAN management, staff, stakeholders in the aviation industry and the general public to achieve success.
In her lecture at the event, Mrs Njideka Nwobu, who is the Secretary of FAAN ACTU, called for collective responsibility to eradicate corruption in workplaces.
According to Nwobu, extortion of passengers, bribes, gratification, lobbying of posting and fraud among others are against the job ethic. She enjoined all FAAN staff to imbibe transparency and accountability in the course of performing their duties.
