ICAN holds 2019 catch them young programme in Anambra

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has organized it’s 2019 “catch them young programme” for secondary school students in Anambra state with a call on them to develop an interest in accountancy as it will help them change the world.

In his welcome address, the chairman ICAN Awka District, Mr Ethelbert Echedo who described accounting profession as a noble one, called on the students to start writing ICAN examinations in order to qualify as professional accountants on graduation from the higher institution, in order to be eligible for the numerous job opportunities available for chartered accountants.

In a paper presentation, an immediate past chairman ICAN Awka District, Dr. Joseph Aroh encouraged students to stop shying away from mathematics which according to him is the simplest subject that one could master through hard work and seriousness, and explained that for one to qualify to write the professional exams, he must have five credits passes including English and Mathematics, in WAEC or NECO, NABTEB or other examinations.

In another paper presentation, a onetime Anambra state Commissioner for Finance, Lady Ngozika Okoye described accountancy as one of the most flexible and robust profession in the world, as the services of the practitioners are needed in every sector of the economy, and encouraged students with interest in accountancy to work hard to achieve their dreams in life.

Also speaking, the chairman of ICAN Awka catch them young committee, Lady Rachael Iliemenam charged the students to put input practice all they learnt during the programme and also extend the knowledge to fellow students.

Some students that spoke to TribuneOnline at the event, including Mr. Nzube Umeh from Holy Child Secondary School Isuofia, Miss Miracle Enendu from British Spring College Awka, and Miss Christabel Obiorah from Girls Secondary School Awka, expressed their love for accountancy profession, and thanked organisers of the event for hosting such a programme for them.

The event which took place at the Teachers House Awka attracted secondary school students and their teachers from both private and public schools across the state and exposed them to the benefits of becoming a professional accountant in this twenty-first century.

In another development, an Ukpor, Nnewi South local government area born philanthropist, Sir Lawrence Onuchukwu, who is also Executive Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council has donated ten thousand exercise books to sixty-three public schools in his council area.

Mr Lawrence, also donated five hundred bags of rice for the indigent people in the area, as part of activities to formally unveil the Law Onuchukwu Foundation.

The activities which took place at Central School field, Ukpor, yesterday, attracted beneficiaries from all the communities that make up the council, government officials and the clergy.

Addressing the gathering, the Director General, Law Onuchukwu Foundation, Prince Linus Eze, said that the foundation which is faith-based was found purely for charity and to provide succour and economic empowerment to the less privileged in the society.

Prince Eze stated that the foundation seeks to eradicate poverty through various programs, with a focus on the vulnerable members of society.

The Member representing Nnewi South Constituency, in the state House of Assembly, Honourable Johnbosco Akaegbobi extolled the spirit of the donor in handing over learning materials to the pupils, lamenting that many primary schools in that area are still lacking facilities and called on other affluent individuals to join hands to impact on humanity.

Also speaking,  the transition committee chairman of Nnewi South, Engineer Chieloka Okoye, said the gesture was a welcome development as it will go a long way in addressing the education needs of the beneficiaries.

In his welcome address, the donor, Sir Lawrence Onuchukwu, said the foundation which is non-political or governmental is his brainchild initiative, aimed at transforming the lives of people living in extreme poverty in putting smiles on their faces.

Sir Onuchukwu, said that the Foundation will cut across the country, reaching to the people that needed help and it’s being financed with fifty per cent of his salary.

In their remarks, the Vice-Chairman, Madosi Local Government, Kano state Honourable Mukfar Dahiru and the Vice-Chairman, Owerri Municipal council, Honourable Faisal Lawal commended Sir Lawrence, for initiating the foundation.

While thanking the donor for remembering them, a beneficiary Mrs Juliana Okonkwo, prayed God to strengthen Sir Lawrence.
