The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) on Tuesday donated a 350-seater ultra-modern lecture theatre to the Department of Accounting, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
The ICAN National President, Mr Dicon Titus-Soetan, said at the inauguration of the facility, that the donation was part of the institute’s efforts to encourage the study of accounting.
Titus-Soetan urged the university to make judicious use of the theatre.
He said that ICAN, established in 1965 with the aim of training accountants and regulating accounting practice, had 42,000 members so far.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, said that ICAN and ABU shared a common objective of promoting integrity, excellence and professionalism.
Garba, who was represented by his deputy (Administration), Prof. Kabir Bala, said that accounting profession was built on trust and integrity.
“Good societies are built on strong moral principles of honesty and decency.
“We must commend ICAN for delivering the project in good time because the groundbreaking was performed in December last year,” Garba said.
The vice chancellor said that there was the need for private organisations and well-meaning individuals to assist government in funding education.
The Head of Accounting Department of ABU, Dr Salisu Abubakar, promised that the department would use the facility for the development of the institution and the entire Nigeria.
