The 2019 Times Higher Education World University ranking has ranked Ibadan College of Medicine the best in Nigeria for clinical, preclinical and health sciences.

The ranking which featured 1000 institutions was based on 13 separate performance indicators covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, placed Ibadan College of Medicine among the top 400 medical science institutions globally.

Provost, College of Medicine, Professor Olubunmi Olapade-Olaopa, said the global ranking has reaffirmed that the 70-year-old Ibadan Medicine School is now one of the top 10 in West Africa and Central Africa.

Olapade-Olaopa, speaking through the college’s deputy provost, Professor Babafunke Denloye, stated that the college management recognized the achievement as the collective effort of all members of its community over the years.

In line with the vision of the university to be a world-class institution for academic excellence geared towards meeting societal needs, he said the college would continue to work harder to ensure that it surpasses Makerere University, Uganda ranked the best in Africa.

Professor Olapade-Olaopa said achieving this would entail the College further projecting itself through international collaborative researches and visibility on-line.

He pledged the college’s commitment to continue in the path its forebears charted that led to the college’s new ranking as the best in any institution in Nigeria in recent times.

According to him, “The College also witnessed the admission of two of its faculty to the highest degrees in science by examination at the recent convocation.

“When these achievements are taken together, it is our belief that the college is best poised to respond to the demands made severally at the graduation ceremony for the University of Ibadan to produce a Nobel Prize winner.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, founded in 2004, provide the definitive list of the world’s best universities and has become a vital study advice resource for students to determine who to trust with their education.

The rankings are also widely used by faculty to inform career decisions by university leaders to help set strategic priorities and by governments to help monitor policy.
