IAR&T tutors livestock farmers on latest trends

INSTITUTE of Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T), has tutored close to 300 livestock farmers on latest trends in livestock farming.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on the sidelines of the training programme which held on the premises of the institute, the Executive Director, IAR&T, Professor James Adediran, who was represented by Professor Kingsley Adesehinwa, said:”We are here to train farmers in line with capacity building with respect to what they are already doing.

“We have poultry farmers in house, we have sheep and goat farmers and we have pig farmers as well. Those who are already doing it but not necessarily doing it in line with the present cutting edge technologically-driven standard. So we have invited them so that they can improve on their practices, generate more income and then empower them.”

Adesehinwa further hinted that farmers in attendance would receive some financial package as well as other packages at the end of the training. He also informed that the period earmarked for the training is sufficient stating that: they are practicing farmers and what we are doing is giving them a pep up so that they would be able to improve on their management practices, learn the latest cutting edge technologies that are available that they can afford and that can impact on what they are pesently doing.”

The coordinator of the training, Professor Joseph Omole, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, informed that new technologies that has been developed by IAR&T would be introduced to the farmers during the training.

Also, IAR&T through the sponsorship of the Federal House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture Research Institutes, Colleges of Agriculture and Allied Institutes, organised a two-day capacity building training for poultry farmers on poultry value chain.

The training coordinator, Professor Joseph Omole, said:”This programme is about empowering the youths in Nigeria on poultry value chain and what they can do on poultry, what are the importance of poultry, what are the business opprtunities abound in poultry farming. And apart from that, we want to train them so that they too can start poultry business.”

He hinted that the participants at the training would get starter packs such as chickens and other poultry products.
