AN Upper Area Court in Kubwa,  Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered a housewife, Aisha Hamisu, to return the N50,000 her husband, Nasiru Yunusa paid as dowry.

The judge, Muhammad Wakili, granted Aisha her prayer for divorce after three years of marriage on the grounds of lack of care and disrespect.

The judge dissolved their marriage in accordance with Islamic Law.

Wakili also said that a certificate of divorce would be issued to Aisha.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Wakili held that Nasiru was unable to prove his claims that he spent N1 million on Aisha.

He also ordered Aishat to observe “Iddah”, an observation period of three months after the judgment before contracting another marriage.

Aishat and Nasiru got married according to Islamic law sometime in 2021 and have a 13-month-old daughter.

Earlier, Nasiru said he wanted Aishat to return to his house, but that he would grant her divorce if she agreed to compensate him.

“I spent money on a lawyer for court proceedings which is ongoing and all I have spent on her so far is N1 million.

“I am ready to prove this,” he said.

In her response, Aminat said she no longer loves Nasiru and cannot live with him.

“It is not true that he spent N1 million on me because I have been living with my parents in the past two and a half years after he dumped my property at their doorsteps.

“I had our daughter through a Caesarean section at Kubwa General Hospital and he did not pay a dime as my hospital bill.

“I am ready to pay him back only N50,000 which was the dowry he paid on me,” she said.
