My wife is a thorn in the flesh. She usurped my position in the home and dictated the tune.
She has a caustic tongue and verbally abused me at every given opportunity. She got me arrested and severely dealt with by security corps after locking me up in the house while nobody dared to come to my aid because they greatly feared her.”
“I want him to rent me an apartment and pay for three years since he is insisting on divorce. He should in addition give me N30, 000 per month for food.”
These were part of the testimonies given at Grade A Customary Court, Oja Oba, Mapo, Ibadan, by a couple, Kazeem Yekeen and Opeyemi Yekeen.
Kazeem, who dragged his wife to court, alleged that she made his life miserable in their marriage.
Kazeem explained that Opeyemi rubbed shoulders with him in the home and refused that he had a say.
He also stated that Opeyemi apart from flouting his order at will, always threatened to blackmail him, dent his image and later kill him.
According to him, she made real her threat when she dragged him to a radio problem which deals with crises in marriage.
The plaintiff added that the defendant was evil and constantly rained curses on him.
He added that she went further to cast a spell on him.
Kazeem told the court that Opeyemi dealt brutally with him on some occasions which made their neighbours to fear her and kept their distance from her.
The plaintiff stated that he had had enough of his wife’s atrocities and therefore prayed that their marriage be dissolved.
Kazeem begged that their child be put in Opeyemi’s custody since she’s a female and an infant.
He offered to give N10,000 monthly for their child’s feeding and be responsible for her education.
The plaintiff requested for an order restraining the defendant from threatening and interfering with his private life.
Opeyemi agreed to all that her husband said.
According to her, she had apologised to him, but he refused to forgive her.
She, therefore, entreated the court to rule that he got her and their child a new accommodation and pay the rent of three years.
She further begged the court to mandate him to be responsible for their child’s feeding, education and health care.
Kazeem in his evidence said, “My wife and I held an introduction ceremony and we started living together after we dated for a short period of time.
“I did not pay her bride price.
“Opeyemi started misbehaving shortly after she moved into my house.
She was stubborn and never listened to my instructions. She flouted my orders at will.
“Opeyemi took advantage of my being tolerant and became domineering in the home. She gradually usurped my position and started dictating the tune.
“My wife always fought me. She would go wild and violent during a fight which made our neighbours kept their distance from her.
“Opeyemi always threatened to blackmail me, soil my name and later kill me.
“She has a caustic tongue and was in the habit of assaulting me verbally.
“She rained curses on me day and night and even went as far as casting a spell on me.
“My wife once during her frenzy moments locked me up in the room and kept the key.
She refused that I went out that day.
“At another time she seized the key to my car and restricted my movements.
“My lord, my wife once invited security corps to our home and they dealt with me ruthlessly.
“Opeyemi made real her threat of denting my image when she dragged me to a radio station which ran a programme on marital crises.
“She made terrible allegations against me which were all lies while the programme was being aired, but I was later vindicated.
“She kept threatening to kill me after this which prompted my coming to court.
“I pray this honourable court to put an end to my marriage with my wife.
“I plead that our only child be put in my wife’s care because she is a female and still young.
“I am ready to give her N10,000 every month for food and also take up the responsibility of her education.
“I further beg the court to restrain my wife from threatening and interfering with my private life.”
Opeyemi responding said, “It is true that I fought with my husband, but he refused to forgive me and take me back after I have apologised to him.
“My lord, if my husband is insisting on divorce, he should get an accommodation for me and our child and pay the rent of three years.
“He should also be responsible for our daughter’s feeding, education and medical service.
“I pray the court to rule that he gives me N30, 000 every month for our child’s feeding and all her other needs.”
Ruling, the court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, stated that there was no marriage between them, but that they were co-habiting since the plaintiff did not pay the defendant’s bride price.
According to her, there was no marriage to be dissolved.
Akintayo granted the defendant custody of their child and mandated the plaintiff to be responsible for her upkeep giving feeding, education and health care priority.
Both parties were ordered to maintain peace.
