I want divorce ‘cos my husband refused to say ‘sorry’ after beating me, woman tells court

Published by

Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned until February 25, a divorce suit brought before it by a woman, Bashirat, against her husband, Alabi, whom she accused of irresponsibility, constant battery and pride.

Bashirat stated that Alabi shirked his responsibility in the home on a constant basis and was never ready to change.

According to the plaintiff, the more she complained, the worse he became and would, on many occasions, descend on her with punches.

Bashirat added that she left home when she could no longer bear with her husband’s maltreatment of her, but that he felt too proud to seek forgiveness from her and from her parents.

Bashirat stated that Alabi’s attitude showed that he was not remorseful and unwilling to change.
The plaintiff thus prayed the court to end their relationship and grant her their children’s custody.
She further entreated the court to mandate her husband to be responsible for their children’s upkeep.

Alabi refused to come to court despite being served court summonses.
Bashirat, in her testimony, said, “My husband’s presence was never felt in the home.

“He abandoned his duties in the home and left me and our children to suffer.

“He always got annoyed whenever I called his attention to his lapses in the home and would beat me blue black.

“I moved out of his house when I could no longer bear with his beatings.

“My husband is proud.

“My parents and I were expecting him to come begging and apologising for his misconduct, but he never came.

“He felt too big to say sorry.

“My lord, I pray the court to end our union and grant me custody of our children.

“I further plead that the court mandate him to be responsible for their upkeep, giving feeding, education and health care priority”.

The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case and ordered that fresh hearing notice be issued and served the defendant.
