I sold my property to secure his bail after selling stolen car —Wife

A woman, Adijat Akinbo has told in Ojo Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Ibadan, Oyo State she’s no longer interested her marriage.

Adijat who had been married to her husband, Monsuru Akinbo for 12 years, sought for divorce on the grounds of irresponsibility and battery by her husband.

The plaintiff therefore prayed the court to terminate their relationship and grant her custody of their three children.

Monsuru did not agree to divorce.

The plaintiff, giving her evidence told the court that: “All I receive from my husband for playing his role in the home are punches. He doesn’t know how food gets to the table, neither dose  he know which school our children are attending, what classes they are and how much they are paying as school fees. What he knows best to do is to fight me at every given opportunity.

‘He dashes out of the house everyday to avoid leaving feeding allowance and will return home late demanding for food. We will fight and wake up our children and neighbours who had gone to bed.

“I moved out of his house with our children and went to my mother’s place when I couldn’t bear with his irresponsible act any more, but he still came there to create scene.

“Few days after I moved back to his house ,he was arrested and put in police custody for joining a friend in selling a stolen vehicle.

“None of his family members showed concern during this period or made effort to secure his release.  He begged me to help him raise the required sum for his bail and promised to make a refund.  Seeing I had nothing on me, I ran from pillar to post seeking financial help from friends and business associates but couldn’t raise a reasonable amount. I had to sell my property to raise the needed sum for his bail.

“My lord, anytime I ask for this money after his release, he will curse and descend on me with heavy blows.

“I nurse body ache everyday as a result of the punches I received from him. He will kill me if I don’t end our relationship, please separate us.”

“My lord, my wife has been unfaithful to me and this had often led to a fight between us. We once fought and she moved to her mother’s place with our three children, the youngest being a seven-month-old baby.

“I make a living as an okada rider and work late. I went to my mother-in-law’s  place  around 10:30 pm to see my wife and kids and give them feeding allowance but was shocked at what I saw.  I met her seeing off  a man who I’m sure was her lover. They were both chatting and holding hands. I challenged the man and we would have fought but for neighbours who mediated in the matter. Her mother all through the time we were arguing took side with her.

“At another time, I drove into her around 11: 00pm on the road. The spot was about three bus stops to my mother-in-law’s place. My wife was in the midst of men. We fought again but she later moved back to my place after our differences were ironed out.

“My lord, immediately she moved back home, she made friend with our landlady who introduced her to a prayer house. My wife would leave the children at home and go for days to attend prayers on the mountain top. On many occasions, I would be forced to abandon work and stay at home with the children.

“My bike was taken from me due to failure to make a daily payment for its purchase as agreed. I got fed up one day and stormed our landlady’s apartment warning her to stop taking my wife to church.

“She reacted by throwing us out of her house, “he concluded.

After he had listened to the couple, the court president dissolved their union and granted custody of their children to the plaintiff.

The defendant was ordered to pay the sum of N10, 000 monthly through the court as their children’s feeding allowance and be responsible for their education and health care.
