The ecstasy that greeted the month of May cannot be said to have visited the abode of three-year-old Joy Richard and her family. Although named Joy, her deteriorating condition has made any reflection of the emotion called joy a far visitor from her home and her parents’ hearts since she was diagnosed with a chest infection at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
Dr Bosede Adebayo, Consultant Pediatrics Cardiologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in a letter confirming that Joy needs financial help to undergo a surgery as results of the chest x-ray carried out on her, has revealed that she has an enlarged heart with a CTR of 0.7 and widespread patchy opacities.
Joy also has features consistent with someone having right artial enlargement and right ventricular hypertrophy on ECG while Echocardiography revealed a 12mm subarctic VSD with septal aneurysm, mild pulmonary hypertension and a bicuspid aortic valve indicating that she is suffering from Sub Aortic VSD with Septal Aneurysm.
Speaking on their plight, Joy’s mother, Mrs Grace Richard, a petty trader said all she could understand from the doctor’s report is that her baby is in need of urgent medical attention. Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, she said, “so far, our family has only been able to raise N100,000 out of the N3 million needed for the surgery. The doctors told us that the surgery must be carried out very quickly in order for my baby’s condition not to get worse and to help her live a normal life.”
Richard Joy has been in and out of the hospital since January 2018. Currently, she is in a critical condition and requires cardiac surgery to repair the heart defect in order to prevent further recurrent chest infections and optimise her potential for growth.
For this to happen, little Joy needs N3 million for surgery at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital and this is beyond the reach of her family.
The family is calling on well-meaning Nigerians to help in allowing Joy live and fulfill her purpose in life. The family can be reached on 080645550075, 07085876959
